“Physiatry is more than a medical specialty. It’s a way of life. “The mantra of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation [AAPM&R] skyrockets as the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine [PARM] celebrated its very first PARM Physiatry Day on October 13, 2018. The PARM National Capital Region [NCR] Chapter launched a commemoration at the Philippine Medical Association Auditorium at North Avenue, Quezon City with a lecture of Dr. Mae Angeleine Ongchuan, from the NCR Chapter who presented a comprehensive discussion on Physiatry as a medical specialty and a way of life, dating back to its incipience by Dr. Howard A. Rusk as the founder of Rehabilitation Medicine and Dr. Frank H. Krusen as the founder of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. The very first national PARM Physiatry Day was led by Dr. Ma. Eulalia Beredo, with Dr. RE Justin Adobo as co-chair and Dr. Melecio Pena III as chair of PARM NCR Chapter Physiatry Day. PARM members, including consultants, residents and alumni participated in the discussion, fun games and Filipino fiesta with PARM doctors and a multitude of corporate partners.

On November 30, 2018, PARM NCR Chapter held its 4th Scientific Meeting at The Upper Deck Sports Center, Ortigas Technopoint Building 1, 1 Dona Julia Vargas Avenue, Pasig City. In coordination with the Philippine Center for Sports Medicine, Kineticore Philippines, JCS NeuroSports and BTL Philippines, the congress was granted 9 Continuing Professional Development [CPD] units by the Professional Regulation Commission [PRC]. Themed, Symphony: Lower Limb Sports Conditioning, Performance & Recovery for Return to Play, the scientific meeting showcased a 360 degrees Sports Medicine team in symphony to provide the supreme gold standard of care for the injured athlete.

Dr. Randolph Molo, the Sports Medicine Orthopedist of the Philippine Center of Sports Medicine and Team Doctor of the Philippine Azkals, discussed the Sports Medicine Management of Lower Limb Sports Injuries followed by Dr. Noel Nathaniel Napa, from the PARM NCR Chapter and the Philippine Basketball Association [PBA] who focused on Lower Limb Biomechanics to Prevent Sports Injuries and Enhance Sports Performance. Coach Aspi Calagopi, PTRP, MS Sports, the Team Sports Physiotherapist of Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings of the PBA and Chief Executive Officer of Kineticore Philippines, showcased Sports Physiotherapy Management of Lower Limb Sports Injuries with Coach Jaric Lavalle, XPS from the American Council for Exercise and Conditioning Coach of Kineticore Philippines who spearheaded the actual conditioning, performance and recovery workshop for the lower limbs, in partnership with Totum Sport from JCS NeuroSports.

Moreover, PARM NCR Chapter Secretary Dr. Mae Angeleine Ongchuan, from the American College of Sports Medicine and PARM NCR Chapter President Dr. Melecio Pena III delved on Physical & Rehabilitation Management of Lower Limb Sports Injuries and Nutraceuticals in Sports Medicine, respectively. Further, to highlight State-of-the-Art Sports Medicine Modalities, Dr. Jose Bonifacio Rafanan, from the Federation of Sports Schools Association of the Philippines and PARM NCR Chapter Adviser presented a forum on Targeted Radiofrequency. The seminar-workshop was spectacular that the next edition is scheduled on August 11, 2019 at the University of Santo Tomas CME Auditorium Manila during the 6th PARM NCR Chapter Scientific Meeting themed, Symphony: Sports Conditioning & Recovery of the Shoulder for Return to Play. For the 5th PARM NCR Chapter Scientific Meeting, the chapter held a Joint PARM Scientific Meeting at the Marco Polo Ortigas Grand Ballroom A themed, Project NeuroMedicine: Neuropathic Pain, with Dr. John Jerusalem Tiongson, an esteemed neurologist from The Medical City as resource speaker. The summit was granted 2 PRC CPD units. The Fellowship Meeting for all PARM members to celebrate the yuletide ensued with Star Hunt: Movie Soundtracks. The team talent tournament was judged by Manoeuvres Ignite, featuring Brion and RJ. The champion squad was the Philippine Orthopedic Center with the Philippine General Hospital and St. Luke’s Medical Center as first and second runners-up, respectively. Adjudged as Best Actor was Dr. Justine Zamora [St. Luke’s Medical Center] and Best Actress was Dr. Hanna Faber [Philippine Orthopedic Center]. Movie fun games, Copy Cut and Movie Charades were both won by the Philippine General Hospital.

The new set of officers for the PARM NCR Chapter, advisers and members were also inducted in the oath taking ceremonies officiated by our beloved President, Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon. Our newly elected PARM NCR Chapter Officers 2019-2021 are Dr. Jerico Dela Cruz [President], Dr. Mae Angeleine Ongchuan [Vice-President], Dr. Ma. Arlene Lee-Ledesma [Secretary], Dr. Jo Ann Monica Dacanay-Alsiyao [Treasurer] and Dr. Melecio Pena III [Ex-Officio]. The trifecta of scientific, fellowship and business meeting attended by PARM members across the archipelago was conducted in coordination with Medichem, the CNS Subsidiary of Unilab.

As a continuing series to enrich the Research Program of PARM and empower its members in the medical research writing, peer review and critical appraisal, research methodology, research design, research statistics and publication of scholarly articles, among others - PARM, the PARM Research Committee and PARM NCR Chapter collaborated with the University of the Philippines Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Medichem Academe to conduct Write Right 3: Good Clinical Practice and Principles of Ethics in Research granted with 9 PRC CPD units. Our distinguished faculty was headed by Dr. Cecilia Maramba-Lazarte and included Dr. Cecilia Jimeno, Prof. Edlyn Jimenez, Dr. Lynn Crisanta Panganiban and Dr. Jose Paciano Reyes.

The seminar-workshop was held on February 10, 2019 at the Unilab Bayanihan Center Annex, Rooms J, K & L and was attended by PARM members – consultants, residents and alumni. The congress was realized in cooperation with Medichem, the CNS Subsidiary of Unilab thru Mr. Rommel Dolor. Write Right was conceptualized by our trailblazing former President Dr. Renald Peter T. Ramiro in 2015. To this date, the series has created a significant impact in the research agenda of PARM, including PARM Research Forum and PARM Proceedings, the official journal. Succeeding workshops will be conducted including topics on Research Design, Research Methodology, and Research Statistics, among others.

The symphony of science and research is the shape of the future. Thru the mélange of scientific meetings in the pursuit of professional excellence and research workshops to enhance the researcher in writing and publishing scholarly articles enriching our clinical knowledge and skills, a physiatrist is empowered and philharmonic in principle and in practice.
